KORAT (Thailand), Jan 24 (Bernama) -- National paralympic archer Muhamad Salam Sidik put up a splendid show to grab the gold for Malaysia in the men's wheelchair recurve event.

He beat compatriot Zulkifli Mat Zain 103-99 in the final event at the Fourth Asean Para Games here.

"For me, the final event today meant that I had to do my individual best as I was competing against my own team mate. The best will emerge as the winner," said Muhamad Salam when met at the Football Stadium of the Suranaree University of Technology, here.

"As archery was being included in the Asean Para Games for the first time, I had initially aspired to create a Fespic Games record but could only achieve the gold," said Muhamad Salam, who had already qualified for the Beijing Paralympic Games in September after achieving the sixth world ranking currently.

Muhamad Salam's best achievement in the Paralympic Games was to advance to the quarterfinals and finishing fifth at the Athens Paralympic Games in 2004.

Meanwhile, Mohd Suhaimi Mat Desa and Nor Sa'adah Abdul Wahab each won the bronze in the men's standing recurve and women's open recurve respectively.

Tomorrow, the Malaysian archers will face the Thailand archers in the men's team recurve open which will be the last gold in the archery events at the Fourth Para Asean Games.

From Farhanah Azmi

KORAT, Jan 24 (Bernama) -- Malaysia won two gold medals and broke the Asean Para Games records in powerlifting at the Kebkanjana Hall of the Chanapolkhan Institute of Technology here today.

The gold medals were won by national powerlifting ace P. Mariappan in the men's 67.5kg category and Mohd Yuspi Mat Dali in the 75kg. In addition, Siow Lee Chan took the bronze in the women's 56kg category.

"I am simply delighted to win a gold medal for Malaysia and improve on the Games record that I made in Manila two years ago. But I am a little disappointed as I had targeted to lift 180kg," said Mariappan, 50, who has been involved in the sport for 28 years.

In today's competition, Mariappan lifted 172.5kg in the first attempt, but failed to lift 177.5kg in two other attempts.

"During training for this Para Games, I did 180kg. But my personal best was 182.5kg at the Paralympic Games in Athens," he said.

The silver was won by Thai athlete Kampa Pongtao (160kg) while Quang Ma Phuong from Vietnam took the bronze (142.5kg).

Mohd Yuspi also improved on his record of lifting 158kg at the Manila Para Games to 162.5kg in Korat.

"I am satisfied with my achievement today as I had targeted a gold medal, my third in the Asean Para Games since Hanoi in 2003," said the 32-year-old from Bukit Mertajam, Penang.

Mohd Yuspi, who had taken part in the Athens Paralympic Games, hopes his record-breaking feat today will qualify him for the Beijing Paralympics.
